University Housing and the Office of Intercultural Student Affairs are committed to providing a safe and comfortable living environment for all students, including those students who identify as transgender, non-binary, non-conforming, and other gender identities. Any student seeking accommodations for living in the residence halls at Appalachian State University should download and complete the Housing Accommodations Request form in AppSync in the Office of Intercultural Student Affairs portal.
All requests are kept confidential and reviewed by the Associate Director in the Office of Intercultural Student Affairs and the Associate Director for Administrative Services in University Housing. These offices will work collaboratively to determine how to best meet the requests and needs of each student.
Because of limitations in available housing options, there is no guarantee that all of the student's requests can be met, but we are committed to working with each student to find the best accommodations possible. It is important to request your accommodations as soon as possible while the widest range of options are still available.
University Housing assignment decisions for transgender students are guided by the following values:
- Respect and affirmation of the student's gender identity and/or expression
- Prioritized attention to the student's physical safety and emotional health
- Enhancing the student's opportunity for success at Appalachian State University by finding the best match between the student's needs and the options available
Additional information and resources for transgender students can be found at the LGBT Center .
First Year Students and Transfer Students
Requests from first year students and transfer students received before April 1 for fall and December 1 for spring will receive priority placement. Please note, transfer students are not guaranteed on-campus housing and acceptance of an accommodations request does not guarantee housing for a transfer student.
Continuing students must renew their accommodations request on an annual basis. Requests received by February 1 will receive priority placement. Continuing students who wish to receive continued accommodations must submit an application for housing and an accommodation request by the application deadline in order to be considered for continued accommodations on campus.
